Philosophy

My students and I enjoy a relaxed focused atmosphere where we work to accomplish the 3-part plan to math and science success:

1) Build a Strong Foundation

A single math or science problem can involve a variety of skills from start to finish.  My students and I work together to break up problems into all the skills involved and work toward mastery in every single one.  Learning new and more complex forms of math are made easier if the student feels confident with the concepts that have come before.

2) Learn the Why as Well as the How

Why are we doing this anyway?—I hear that a lot from my students, and they’re right, it’s a brilliant question to ask!  When working through a new concept, I emphasize understanding why and not just memorization. When students understand why math and science work, they gain their own unique ownership of the material have a greater ability to use the tools of math and science to tackle anything thrown at them!

3) Teaching for Tomorrow

With my students who desire additional challenges, I use my experience to prepare them for what’s coming next—no surprises come next term!  If a student expresses a particular interest, we can work together to explore how math and science applies to that field.  It’s one of my favorite types of sessions to do!
